Baseball and Softball are two very popular sports in Old Tappan. The main goal of the Old Tappan Baseball and Softball Association is to provide a fun safe environment in which the children of Old Tappan learn to play the game of baseball/softball. The volunteer coaches are expected to lead by example and to and demonstrate the importance of respect for each other; as well as for coaches, opponents, and umpires. Good sportsmanship at all times is required and is an essential part of our approach in Old Tappan. We expect parental support in reinforcing these values as members of the OTBSA.

Volunteerism is an integral part of our program. We rely on parents to coach, keep score, communicate team activities, work the snackstands, and help with the overall administration of our program.

RECREATION BASEBALL/SOFTBALL LEAGUE

The Recreation Program is for players of all skill levels and is enjoyed by over 400 boys and girls from Kindergarten thru 8th Grade. They learn to play and have fun within an atmosphere that is Safe and Supportive. In this program, the coaching emphasis is primarily on teaching the fundamental skills of the sport and communicating the concept of team play. Recreation Teams will play other Old Tappan teams and/or teams from the surrounding towns. Practices are structured towards helping players improve their fielding, throwing, batting, and baserunning skills within this team setting. Parents should be aware that equal play time for all players is mandatory and coaches are instructed to formulate line-ups which reflect this equal play time philosophy. This coaching philosophy gives each child, regardless of skill level, an opportunity to play different positions throughout the season. Parents should also be aware that safety is always our utmost concern, and positioning may sometimes be a consideration when positioning a child in order to avoid putting a child at risk of injury.

The Recreation season begins with indoor clinics/practices leading to outdoor practices and games which continue until June. The separate divisions are listed below:
