Office of Emergency Management

The Old Tappan Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is responsible for planning for and coordinating the response to all-natural or man-made emergencies that may occur within the borough or within the surrounding areas.  The Old Tappan OEM works closely with local, county and state officials on:

PLANNING: identifying hazards, preparing for contingencies

RESPONSE: the hands-on, initial response to the emergency

RECOVERY: getting back to normal, reestablish services

MITIGATION: prevent or reduce the impact of future emergencies

NJ Office of Emergency Management

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM) works closely with federal, state and local partners to prepare for virtually all hazards, natural or manmade, that could affect New Jersey's families, communities and businesses.

Consider preparing for weather emergencies by following these tips provided by the NJOEM:

  • Sign up for emergency alerts: Tune in, log-on, opt-in, 'like' or 'follow' local, county, state and federal agencies for credible disaster-related information such as alerts, warnings, situational awareness updates, and where to find help.
  • Be NJ Register Ready: Register Ready, New Jersey’s Special Needs Registry for Disasters, allows New Jersey residents with disabilities or access and functional needs and their families, friends and associates an opportunity to provide information to emergency response agencies.
  • Make a family go-bag: While gathering emergency kits, consider packing a go-bag for your family. This can be a duffle bag or gym bag that is easily accessible in the event of an emergency evacuation order. Visit NJOEM’s Your Kit/Your Plan webpage.
  • Craft an emergency plan: Make plans with family and friends in case you're not together when any type of emergency – natural, technological, or person-made – occurs.
  • Make an emergency kit: Emergency kits help individuals and families survive after a disaster for several days without access to food, water, or electricity.
  • Be prepared for a financial emergency: Start an emergency savings account for unexpected emergencies or disasters, and make sure you have cash available, as electronic payment processing systems may not be functional during a disaster.

NJ Register Ready helps people with disabilities to register their special needs with their county office of emergency management. NJ residents with special needs are encouraged to complete the online registration annually. This information is used by emergency planners for their disaster preparedness planning. This way when a disaster occurs, the county has properly prepared to meet the needs. If they don't know in advance the needs of their residents with disabilities, they will not be able to adequately prepare.
