Youth Golf Clinic in Old Tappan

Old Tappan Youth Golf Clinic

Description: A NEW program for boys and girls ages 5 through 8 designed to introduce them to the game of golf!  Teaching will be provided in a clinical format covering the basics of the golf swing, putting, as well as some introductory rules of etiquette and safety.

Modified golf equipment will be used which has been specifically designed and engineered for the purpose of teaching beginners and young children, by simulating the feel of regular golf clubs and balls.  The primary purpose of this introductory clinic is to create a fun and relaxing atmosphere for participants to learn the basic fundamentals of the game of golf!

Registration and Fees:  Registration will be open from approximately July 1 through July 31, and will be available through Community Pass.  A $35.00 fee will be required for each participant, with a maximum of $70.00 per family.

Revised Dates and Times Below

Dates:  We are tentatively scheduling the clinic to begin on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, and each session will start at 6:30 PM and last for one hour.  Each session will be held at Stone Point, as follows:

Session 1:            Wednesday, August 6, 2008
Session 2:            Thursday, August 7, 2008

Session 3:            Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Session 4:            Thursday, August 21, 2008

(Dates subject to change due to weather and field availability)

Clinic Design:  We will have four basic clinic stations, as follows:

1.  Hitting:  Participants will learn the correct way to hold the golf club, and the fundamentals of the swing.  This would allow them to experience hitting the ball with a full swing off a mat and tee.

2.  Pitching/Chipping:  Participants will learn how to use a half-swing and to hit the ball toward a close target.

3.  Putting:  Participants will learn the basics of putting.

4.  Four Hole Mini Golf Course:  A mini "golf course" will be set up during weeks 3 and 4, to create a simple and fun course for the children to play a round of golf (no score-keeping!).  The basics of how to play golf will be introduced, as follows:

·         The experience of "walking the course";
·         Where to stand when a player is taking a shot;
·         Who is "away", i.e., who has "the honor" to hit first;
·         Understanding boundaries and what happens when a ball goes out-of-bounds;
·         How to be quiet when someone else is hitting;
·         How to encourage/compliment fellow players;
·         How golf is FUN!

In addition, in weeks three and four, we will also introduce the children to real youth clubs and allow them to implement what they have learned by hitting reduced-flight range balls off a mat and tee.
